Specification of a Coupled Geological & Wellbore Fluid Dynamics Model

for Uncertainty Analysis and Risk-Based Design on a Subsea Oil Project

This paper describes the method and results of a probabilistic risk analysis that was used to provide a quantitative basis for a complex and high-stakes design decision for a subsea oil project. The geological information was coupled to a wellbore fluid dynamics model to simulate operational outcomes for potential well kill operations.

Customized dynamic kill analyses

Halliburton Boots & Coots’ engineers assist in successfully implementing well killing operations by using reservoir information and fluid and gas properties inputs in Drillbench, a multiphase transient flow simulation software program. Simulation results are interpreted by experienced Boots & Coots engineers who use the combination of data and onsite expertise to create a thorough plan for emergency response to a well control situation.

Software solutions for better decisions

Boots & Coots’ engineers use Drillbench, a multiphase transient flow simulation software from the OLGA® suite of programs, to perform dynamic kill analysis for a variety of scenarios and situations. Our engineers have extensive knowledge of fluid dynamics for innovative kill analysis solutions to produce customized steady state or dynamic kill analyses to determine fluid density and volume, pump rate, pump pressure and hydraulic horsepower

Accurate modeling for accurate analyses

The primary outputs to ensure accurate modeling and determine the minimum pumping capability and equipment logistics for successful well kill operations include:

  • Kill fluid density
  • Minimum kill fluid volume
  • Dynamic kill pump rate
  • Dynamic kill pump pressure
  • Dynamic kill hydraulic horsepower
